Temperament in the movie Glass Onion

Each of the four main “disruptor” friends in the Netflix movie Glass Onion represents one of the elements. Let’s look at each character and see how they are typical of the four temperaments.

Lionel - Melancholic or Earth

When we first meet Lionel, he is working late at the office like a studious and hardworking earth person. He is a scientist.

His logical and quick mind is instrumental in solving the box riddle. He is cautious and inquisitive. His appearance is very neat and orderly, and he often is shown wearing green and earthy tones.

Birdie - Sanguine or Air

The first scene with Birdie shows her at a party, which is going on despite lockdowns. She is very flamboyant and social, the first (and sometimes only) person to say “Hi!” cheerfully to one of the other characters. She needs a sidekick, Peg, to anchor her to reality and and to keep her from running her mouth. Her outfits are dramatic and colorful. Her name is even airy - Birdie. In the image below, she is in a flowing, iridescent gown reminiscent of a butterfly. She is sporting an unusual scowl in this image, though.

Duke - Choleric or Fire

Our first glimpse of Duke is during a rant. Wearing a shirt with flames on it, he is going on a tirade online about something or other. His bulky body is stereotypical for a choleric. When he arrives at the dock, be bursts onto the scene in a loud motorcycle. And, he is never without his firearm.

Claire - Phlegmatic or Water

The movie opens with Claire working at home. The only parent in the group, Claire is both a wife and mother. She is devoted to environmental causes and is concerned about the well-being of society as a whole. She wears neutral, beige clothing with minimal makeup, blending in rather than being louder like the choleric and sanguine characters.

What about the central characters, Andi and Miles? I believe they represent sun / moon duality, as their symbols are the eye, the rising or setting sun, and black / white (Andi is often wearing black and white in the film). But that’s for another time.
